DO WE REALLY NEED SUPPLEMENTS?
In todays world supplements seem to be everywhere, but do we really need them? As a nutritionist, I often get asked whether supplements are necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and the answer is a bit more nuanced than a simple yes or no.
Balanced Diet Is Key
The foundation of a good health is a well - rounded, whole foods diet. Ideally, most of the nutrients our bodies need can be obtained through a diverse range of fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and healthy fats. Therefore, taking a supplement is unnecessary, as we can get it all naturally, via whole foods.
Foods provide not just vitamins and minerals, but also fiber and antioxidants, and other bioactive compounds that contribute to overall health, things that supplements alone cannot replicate.
When supplements are necessary
Nutrient Deficiencies: If a blood test reveals that you are low in a specific nutrient, like Iron, Vitamin D or B12, taking a supplement can help to restore balance.
Dietary Restrictions: If you follow a vegan diet, have food allergies, you can miss out on certain nutrients. Vegans for example, often need to supplement B12 or Omega-3 fatty acids since these are typically found in animal products.
Supplements for Athletes and Active Individuals
If you are an athlete or have a highly active lifestyle, your body may have higher energy and nutrient demands. While it is always best to get as much as you can from whole foods, supplements like protein powder or electrolytes may be useful in supporting recovery and performance.
Age specific needs
Pregnant woman: Pregnancy significantly increases the need for certain nutrients like Folic Acid and Iron. Prenatal vitamins are recommended to support both the mother and the baby’s health.
Older Adults: As we age, our bodies have a harder time absorbing nutrients like Calcium, Vitamin D, and Magnesium, which are critical for maintaining bone health. Supplementing can help prevent deficiencies and support overall well-being.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Before jumping on the supplement bandwagon, it is always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider or a nutritionist who can asses your individual needs.
So do we need to take supplements? The answer is yes, sometimes. But for most people, focusing on a nutrient- dense and a whole-food diet is the best way to ensure long-term health and well-being!
